De Niro sends up Hollywood and Cannes in new film

By Mike Collett-White

CANNES, France (Reuters) - Robert De Niro plays a movie
producer whose professional and personal life lurches from
crisis to crisis in a new comedy on the cut-throat world of
Hollywood and its relationship with the Cannes film festival.

The final scenes of "What Just Happened" play out in the
Riviera resort where De Niro's picture has its premiere, making
it a fitting closing film for the festival on Sunday.

Sean Penn and Bruce Willis also send themselves up in the
satire based on the memoirs of veteran Hollywood producer Art
Linson and directed by Barry Levinson, who made "Rain Man."

De Niro plays Ben, who must juggle two ex-wives and their
families, a pill-popping bi-polar director, a ruthless studio
boss demanding radical changes to his picture and Willis
steadfastly refusing to shave his beard for an action hero
role.

The film casts an ironic eye on the process of getting
movies made, how cash outweighs quality almost every time and
how no one in Hollywood is safe from the whims of studio
bosses, superstar actors and the movie-going public.

"It really is a place where most people are not doing
well," said Linson, when asked about how Hollywood was
perceived. "I know it's hard to believe.

"Most people are there doing their best not to be asked to
leave. I don't care if you're Steven Spielberg or some new
director, everybody is like a snail on a glass trying to hang
on and not to slip down and lose their standing."

Lionsgate acquires 'Animal Cruelty'

Worldwide rights to spec from first-time scribe

Lionsgate has acquired worldwide rights to "Stop Huntingdon Animal Cruelty," a spec script by first-time screenwriter Adam Sachs.

The script -- described as a quirky, elevated comedy in the vein of "Thank You for Smoking" -- centers on an unlikely friendship between a lonely reporter and an outspoken teen who bond during an animal-rights protest.

Sachs graduated from Harvard last year with a major in Earth and planetary science and had been writing for the Harvard Lampoon. He said he penned a humor piece for a Web site that caught the attention of Energy Entertainment's Adam Marshall.

"He loved it and helped me develop a spec," Sachs said.

Producing are Brooklyn Weaver of Energy and Todd Garner of Broken Road Prods. Marshall and Sean Robins of Broken Road also will serve in producing capacities.

Lionsgate vp production Jim Miller is overseeing the project for the company.

Sachs is repped by WMA and Energy.

Britney Spears now dating paparazzo?

Pop singer Britney Spears has been spotted socialising with paparazzo Adnan Ghalib, who regularly photographs the star.
According to People magazine, 26-year-old Spears and 35-year-old Ghalib were spotted at two hotels together recently.
The report claims that the pair checked into the Le Parker Meridien Hotel at 2:30am on one occasion, with two security guards accompanying them.
A source said: "There was nothing romantic going on with Adnan. She was distracted, clicking away on her PDA."
Spears and Ghalib were spotted checking out of the hotel five hours later.
The pair have also been spotted driving together and socialising at a Beverly Hills hotel.
In an interview with '20/20', the photographer previously said of Spears: "I think she's a great person. It's unfortunate that she's the way she is, because of the people she surrounds herself with."

Fourth Bourne film still a possibility

Actor Matt Damon and director Paul Greengrass have been discussing whether there will be a follow-up to 'The Bourne Ultimatum'.
Speaking to Empire magazine at the Empire Awards about the speculation regarding a fourth film, Damon said: "I think it's one of these stories that has a life of its own. Not that we're against it, we're all for doing a fourth movie but it means coming up with a good story. There are a lot of things that would have to happen before we would sign up for it."
Reacting to Damon's response, Greengrass said: "He says yes? It's news to me. I think the truth is that it's a very well loved franchise, but we're in the process of trying to work out what kind of film you could make."
He continued: "If there is one, what would it be? How it could go? Without any pressure; without any commitment to it, but everybody loved the franchise. We love it, but none of us would want to go again unless we're sure there's a worthwhile film and that could take some time. You don't want to do that when you feel like you've got to make it and none of us need to, so that's where we are".
